GreatBay Aquaculture of NH, LLC (GBA) - founded in 1995 in Portsmouth, NH - is the first land-based commercial marine fish hatchery in the U.S. GBA produces the highest quality cultured marine fin-fish and is currently the only commercial hatchery in the country to produce multiple marine species year round. The company’s mission is to be a world leader in the production of juvenile marine fish through the commercialization of technology and its application to aquaculture.

GreatBay Aquaculture became part of the LOCAL OCEAN family in 2009. In joining forces, the companies have taken advantage of the many synergies and benefits resulting from the combination of unmatched expertise and bold vision with the efficiencies and market opportunities inherent in vertical integration. GBA supplies all of LOCAL OCEAN's fingerling requirements. Fingerlings are then raised under optimal conditions at LOCAL OCEAN in Greenport, NY until they mature into high quality, healthy fish praised by our customers for their deliciousness and freshness.

Broodstock
GreatBay Aquaculture maintains multiple stocks of broodfish which provide the hatchery with fertilized eggs year round. Species on site include Atlantic cod, broodstock 4Black sea bass, European sea bass, Gilthead sea bream, Summer flounder, White sea bass and California yellowtail. Each stock is maintained in multiple photo-thermal controlled broodstock tanks that allow year round spawning. The broodstock are routinely inspected for quality and health. New broodstock are constantly being selected and worked into the populations.

Research and Development

R&DGreatBay Aquaculture maintains a successful and active research and development program which results in improved growth rates, health, and overall quality of commercially raised marine fish. All R&D -related activities share the goal of continuous improvement in the hatchery’s ability to bring hig
R&Dh-value marine species to commercial production. GBA has established relationships with other hatcheries around the world in an effort to stay informed of the latest developments and advancements in the state of industry knowledge and practice. In recognition of the level of expertise and cutting-edge innovation representative of GBA’s impressive R&D track record, the company has received numerous grants for research initiatives undertaken in collaboration with several academic aquaculture programs. Over time, GBA has established itself as a leading commercial hatchery with R&D priorities that aim to produce breakthrough innovation in advancing sustainable marine aquaculture.

 

Sustainability
sustainability 1GreatBay Aquaculture is concerned about environmental responsibility and utilizes recirculation technology to minimize its water use and discharge, has an active R&D program and is helping to develop novel feeds that reduce the amount of fish meal in the diets without sacrificing performance or nutrition, while Sustainability maintaining its focus on the production of high quality marine fish. The hatchery is under the supervision of a trained staff 24 hours per day in addition to computer controlled monitoring systems. GBA is committed to product safety, quality and environmental stewardship.

People

George Nardi
Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer

George earned an MS in Marine Environmental Science in 1982 from SUNY at Stony Brook. He assisted in the commercial development of queen conch culture in 1981-82, including the development of a fish farm. As seafood specialist for the Kroger Company, he learned the retail side of the fish business, acquiring an understanding of suppliers, products and quality standards. As a manager for Sahlman Seafoods, Inc., he managed over 100 employees and a fleet of 48 shrimp trawlers in South America. Serving as Program Director for the New England Fisheries Development Association from 1988 to 1995 Mr. Nardi received, managed and directed over $4,000,000 in federal fisheries aquaculture research and development grants. He is an expert on the application of HACCP principles to the fish and seafood industry. George founded GreatBay Aquaculture of Maine, LLC, the first commercial cage farm for Atlantic cod in 2008; now a separate company, based in Sorrento, ME. George has guided GreatBay Aquaculture of NH from its beginning in 1995, pioneering the development of flounder culture through today, having now produced commercially 6 species and delivering millions juveniles annually to its own farming operations and third party operations globally.

Brian Gennaco
Hatchery Manager

Brian received his B.S. degree from the University of Maine in Machias in 2004, where he double majored in marine biology and environmental studies in marine ecosystems. After graduation, he worked as facilities and production manager for the Downeast Institute for Marine Research and Education. Working for DEI, he had an integral role in the design and building of their new research center and commercial shellfish hatchery. In 2006, he joined the team at GreatBay where he specializes in live feed management and production.
